When to register for a race?
I couldn't find my answer using the search function, but when should you register for a crit? And no I don't mean by fitness level, but actual date. When does registration usually fill up?

I've noticed for my local races it's about 75% online and 25% day of.
IMHO it helps the event organizers to register earlier so they have funds-in-pocket to pay for things needed at the race, day-of, like EMS, Police, Barricades, Personnel/Staff, etc.
Some events have a cap on how many participants. For hot events, it helps to register early to secure your spot.
Otherwise, it doesn't matter really.

Yeah most of the event flyers I saw had the limit to 50.

There are one or two "hot ticket" races in my area (Virginia) that fill up very quickly. For instance, there's a race called the Jefferson Cup in Charlottesville (an hour or so west of me). The 4 and 5 fields filled up this year to max capacity of ~75 riders within 2 hours of registration opening online, something like a month before the event. All depends on where you are, talk to some local racers and get some advice.

Varies by location, by event, and by category. Like others have said, I have seen a 4/5 race (75 limit) fill and close in less than 6 hrs from opening online. I have also been in races where the field was half full. Just depends.

FWIW, around here (SoCal), the lower categories (5s & 4s) tend to fill up prior to race day.
Then, add in the popularity of the race, i.e.: Manhattan Beach GP will fill up quicker than say the local industrial park training crit.
Last, if you wait until "day-of" registration (alot of racers do - you never know if you'll get sick or crash the week before, wasting your reg. money), there's usually a $10 penalty or some-such.

Around here, I don't think crits ever fill up. RRs, on the other hand, often do. But again, it depends on the event.
If you are concerned, just keep watching the registration to see how full it is getting. If gets near full, sign up in advance.

Depends on your age and category. Around here, a M35+ 4/5 race will fill up in a few hours. (Cycling being the New Golf, doncha know.)
