pack finish
Is was 5x 12 mile laps, pretty flat with rollers (400' per lap). And some bad pavement that caused a few people to lose water bottles.
There were 100 guys including some big teams that didn't really do anything team-ish. Many attack attempts in the first 3 laps. Including a slow one and a corner attack by me (no one came with), but everything was chased within a minute or two. It was apparent nothing was getting away so I rested for ~15 miles. Felt good near the end of the final lap, but moved up too late, focused too hard on the race and not the side of the road after the final corner. Rode off the road and bumped back on but lost the few seconds I needed to move up. Or maybe I was in too much of a panic to get to the front so I lost track of the road edge. Either way, moving up on time would have avoided this blunder.
Last lap was sketchy. When it was fast it was fine, but when it was slow you had 100 people trying to be near the front of a huge blob. I looked over and saw commotion and a diagonal bike on a straight section. The field split like there was a crash, but it never came. Dude saved it. Then a real crash came a few miles from the finish.

Thanks, It isn't terribly bad just banged up from the impact. Hip more than anything else. At first I thought I had broken my wrist, having broken both my wrist in the past multiple 3 times cumulative, I felt the pain for a while and actually moaned for a bit. After about 5 minutes and giving all the info to the officers I decided to keep riding. Biggest shocker, how you can get rash even when the 2 layers of clothing didn't break. This means that the actual clothing dug into the skin. They are just about 3 cherries and 2 bruises.
Thanks ferret. I was the second luckiest of the bunch. 2 didn't make it to the finish since their bikes were very mangled. I felt specially bad about one of them. He's a mexican kid that is super strong and has my same name. I talk to him a bunch just cuz i like speaking in spanish with him. He usually ends up 3,4,5th so he is good. I think he broke his hand. It seemed like it at least with it being swollen and you could tell it was painful. His bike also got the worse of the worse.
All in all it could have been worse. Now the question is... what helmet should I get? mine cracked a little on the back.

fudgy, good job brah.
heal up lsberros! At least the bike is more or less okay!
aaron we have some huge team representation in the 4s here that don't even top 10. Most of their guys just yell the whole race lol. 8 guys from the same team enter, dominate the front for about 10-15mins, then they're all cooked by the time lap cards come up. I don't really understand their strategy but its fun to watch.

Fudgy, great job!
lsberrios, bummer...but glad you and your bike both got out of the crash with only light damage!
Aaron, cheap lesson, bet you won't do that again. Glad you stayed upright!

UCSC Uni RR P123
3rd place
https://www.strava.com/activities/115341632
18 laps of 2.7 miles and 350ft of climbing.
Strategy: hang on as long as possible. Hoped to finish on the winning lap.
I don't race p12 yet so I was a little starstruck and concerned that I knew the name of the Clif Bar guy from when he was on Jelly Belly. He is a bit of a local legend so I may have looked at his USAC page before.
Anyway, I knew he wouldn't get dropped, and he is smooth and gives a good draft so I did what I could to be on his wheel whenever possible. With the circuit as it is, it's just pure attrition. After 5 laps we were about 6 guys. At 10 laps about 5. We were 4 after about 14, and in the finishing "sprint" climb it was just us 3.
Gotta be honest, I was pretty happy to just be there assured of a 3rd place, riding with 2 NRC-racing cat1s, so I went early! **** it, right? How often do you get to attack a guy who has a google suggestion for his name with his pro cycling team?
Outcome was predictable. Short-lived attack lead them out and the two guys duked it out for the win as I spun through the finish and hoped to not fall down.
Success all around. Fun day. Super fun to ride against those guys. Absolute beasts.
-Menso de Jong and Bailey McKnight- - never been happier to try to win and still lose.

Took my first win of the season yesterday in The Swamp Classic RR (also my hometown race). Race was 66 miles (6 laps of 11 miles) with a lot of bumpy chipseal along with some false flats and wind (one small hill). A few miles into the second lap got into a 5 man break. We had to kill it at the beginning to get away and one of the guys got dropped quickly. The break consisted of 4 of us until 1.5 laps to go when they neutralized us due to the p1/2 field and the 3/4 field repeatedly passing each other and the 3/4 field being on their last lap. Was quite hard on the legs but at this point we learned we had a 4 minute gap over the first chase group. After we got going again the group reduced to 3 (Darren - 3rd place, Shawn - 2nd, and I) as the 4th guy couldn't hold the pace after stopping. With about 6km to go, the break was down to Shawn and I as Darren couldn't hold the pace. I attacked at the end of the small hill with about 1.5 km to go but got shut down promptly. I knew that I was still feeling decent enough to crack out a good sprint (well for super skinny guy) so we both pretty much looked at each other and coasted in the final km and then took it to the sprint in the final 200 m.

Greenville Spring Training Series: Fork Shoals RR, Cat 5 -34. 6/20.
This was my second race in this series, and my third race ever. I liked this Fork Shoals course a lot more than the one I had previously raced (Donaldson); it was a moderately hilly 15 mile loop which we road twice over. I tried to stay towards the front portion of the group, which was especially helpful given the pacing of this race with a lot of short, intense efforts. I was also concentrating on taking advantage of my momentum in order to gain positions, which saved me a lot of energy, I think.
Overall, i'm pretty happy with the result. Sorry to hear about to crash, lsberrios. I was nearly involved, too.

The radar shows this as the nastiest part of the storm. It should lighten up a little after a while.
Someone just crashed in a corner by the parking lot.

I took the first prime and got 3rd place. I was hoping to do better, but wasn't willing to take any chances cornering on the wet cobblestone. I'll post a race report and video later. Looks like the weather is clearing up a bit for you. Good luck.

There were 100 guys including some big teams that didn't really do anything team-ish.

Ontario SoCal Cup Crit #2 - Cat 4 - Pack finish...
Raced dumb. I was too far back on the last 3 laps and when I was trying to move up it was a wall of chaos. Ended up in the middle of the pack on the last lap and a crash almost took me out(video to follow). I should of stayed up front more. Chased a bit after the crash but realized it wasn't going anywhere so I just rolled it in with the pack.
Bleh!

Ontario Criterium #2
Category 5

Plan was to stay near the back and conserve energy for the first few laps. I figured towards the end someone will make a move up and I’ll follow. It happened, but we both were weighed and found wanting. Slipped towards the back and stayed there. I knew at that point there was no way I would get near the front. Last half lap my legs were fried from the surges and I just cruised in.
First crit, I followed my plan and executed it. Could have been less timid and hid out of the wind more, but I’m happy with the effort.
