Like Strava, just without any riding required.

Few can touch my 33 KOM!

furiousferret 05-08-14 11:36 AM

What ticks me off about KOM's is many of them are owned by Domestic Pro's from our annual stage race. Its bad enough these guys get to ride all day but now they are taking KOM's from honest, underpaid, hard working Americans that sit in a cubicle all day?

In a few years Strava will have outsourced all the KOM's to Belgians.

There's a difference between a computer and AOL. Computer numbers continue to climb since the first one came out.

My guess is when the new, better UBERRide platform comes out, the Strava user numbers will look like AOL, which was hot stuff back in the day:

Strava is like Hacky Sack and New Kids on the Block. This too shall pass. When it does those of you who go apoplectic when anyone so much as makes a funny about it being like New Kids on the Block or Hacky Sack will be puzzled at why you defended it like someone insulted your mama.

Yo mama so ugly that...

Definitely a California problem and not an Ohio problem.

I need to move out of Ohio...or at least get out of NW Ohio

Okay... It was useful as to elevations and mapping of this loop.. 35 miles and 1,669 feet of climbing. Time wise it's not realistic as it doesn't distinguish between riding and stopped time unlike my now retro Mavic Wintech...

I find the listing of sections of my ride with best times by people rather amusing, not in the least bit relevant but amusing nevertheless.
I will however use this as it is useful for tracking training but as far as joining the record seeking group I just don't get what the point is...

Am i missing something or is it as it strikes me more gimmick than anything else... ??

Give Strava time, it will grow on you.

Check Google, there are great deals going now on the Garmin 800 and the upgrade to the 810 which is still expensive is not much, making the 800 a great buy.

Sometimes I ride with Strava recording on my phone, sometimes with Cyclemeter (It sends wifey pings so she knows where I am still breathing), sometimes I ride with my Garmin 800, indoors I use Virtual Training on a laptop. I upload all my data to Strava though and will consolidate and analyse it there.

Once you get into the KOM's they are fun. I have a few segments where no one else have ridden the whole segment, it comes in handy to compare my best time to my current ride. If I try and get first on the leader board for a segment, I wait until there are ideal conditions, with a strong wind behind me. :-) Then perhaps a month later, I get a note that someone was faster.

The new playback function is great. My last race was a start 5 minutes after the Masters and right now I can play back the race with about 30+ riders who use Strava. I can see how we (Cat4) started closing the gap on the Masters and then one rider among the Masters got dropped, took a short cut different route and joined them again to finish in the bunch. Hilarious.

You can also start a private group and keep track of your friend's training, rides and data.

In short, I have access to Garmin connect, Cyclemeter, Mapmyride and Virtual Training. I find Strava the best. In Strava you can also plan a route, or copy another rider in your area's route and download it to your Garmin.

Don't take KOM's too seriously. Strava will catch data if recording was in your car and you can flag unrealistic times from cheaters, to get them deleted. But there are still loopholes. I do not cheat, and won't tell you how, but if I wanted to, I can beat any KOM, anywhere in the world, with a realistic time, while not leaving North Carolina.

If you don't believe me, send your best KOM link by PM and I will show you as a test.

Nope. Here is a tip. With digital EPO you have to actually ride the route and then tweak the ride. I can beat someones time in France tonight, while being in North Carolina.

I actually think Strava has improved their software and digital epo no longer works??

I don't think there is a way out of the loophole I found. I found out by accident. Nuff said.

Paul Martin has all the KOM's where I used to live in NEO. I saw him at the track once and told him when I was getting back on the bike his times were motivating me to get faster and faster. He chuckled and said as long as people are riding bikes, anything that motivates them is great.

wow I've never seen the playback in action. Just "watched" the last race, it was interesting. The crash at the bell (suddenly riders stopped, others were going much slower), the sprint, a break that got caught, etc. Really cool. The ability to pause etc is nice. It includes, for many riders, the warm up, so it's interesting to see that while I was pinning my number the others were rolling around warming up etc.

http://www.strava.com/segments/6557116?filter=overall is my commute KOM, but it might be difficult since it's marked "private".

Link takes me nowhere.

You have to send me the segment where you have the KOM, or where you feature on the segment leader board. Don't need your Strava name. Preferably a short segment, the longer the segment the more time it will take me.

Or, all I need is a map where the segment is, any map with the start and end of the segment.

Well it's marked "private" so you have an added difficulty. The link was to the leader board.

Sorry, but to post a time slightly better than the KOM best time on a piece of pavement, I have to know where the piece of pavement is.

A segment on this ride Bike Ride Profile | Evening Ride near Alpharetta | Times and Records | Strava, the segment is called "My Evening Commute". I wanted to see if you could hack past the "private" - in my defense you did say "any KOM anywhere".

OK, I will post back in this thread when done. Maybe tonight, maybe the week-end. Nice challenge.

Not fair! Why should they get KOMs just because they're fast?

When they're caught doping does the City of Austin give the #2 guy the KOM or do they just vacate it?

How do you play a race back? I'm not seeing the option.

I didn't see it either so I googled it.

First you go here:
http://labs.strava.com/flyby/

Then you put in the URL for the Strava Activity you want to view. For me, my example was:
Bike Ride Profile | 4/19/2014 Mystic Velo Crit, melted in the wind. near Charlestown | Times and Records | Strava

Finally you check off who you want to view in the playback from the list of riders. The green C is Correlation - the higher the number the more probable they actually rode with you. The purple S means they rode the same roads but not necessarily at the same time, so in a crit they probably did a different race if their C is low. The red D is how far they rode, if their number is really wacky then either they rode a ton or they got shelled.

I selected everyone that was over 50% for C. You can pause and select more or deselect the ones that are obviously not racing or whatever. For me there was a guy Don at 70% C but he was watching the race from the side so I deselected him.

Finally hit the play button. It's fun. Think of significant events in the race - breaks, chases, primes, final sprint, crashes, and you'll see them sort of played out. In my event there was a slow-mo crash just before the bell and you can see how the field just explodes after that, due to some people slowing hard, a few Strava riders falling, and the field itself just splintering under pressure. It really strings out for the finish.

happybday29475 05-08-14 05:47 PM

this is a super cool feature!

I wonder if you can overlay different times...let's say I want to compare a Mt Tam ascent last week with a PR a year ago...
