KingRene you are a winner. . . .
(gee I expected an answer much sooner).
I thought the Circle of the Dead Men was a nice little
curve ball. . .
You're up.

Marty

I will be free to add another question later tonight (est). If this is too long a wait, someone can feel free to pick up the slack.

Thanks.

Dead man typing. Last Summer, I did the Tourmalet, the Soulor and (what was left of) the Aubisque in one solo ride. Needless to say I suffered quite a bit (from the climbing, which is not my thing, and the rain, which should be my thing) and arrived back to the camping site a little late.

Next question, and an easy one at that:

UCI Men's Road Racing. The fastest Classic. What is it, who won it and what was his exact speed?

Yes...Hilversum has a "hill"....53 x 17. :D

I did do a race in Veenendal that had a decent climb in it each lap.

gcasillo 04-25-05 06:22 PM

1997 Paris-Tours. Andrei Tchmil. 48.929 km/h.

ed073 04-25-05 06:31 PM

that's moving.

classic1 04-25-05 08:42 PM

ed073, you'll appreciate this. Dean Woods got fastest time in the Melbourne to Warrnambool in 1990. 260km in 5hr 12 mins. 50km/h average

531Aussie 04-25-05 08:51 PM

never thought he made the most of his ability.

What happened to his road career?

Correct...I was going to bring that up. A very rare 45kmh easterly blew all day....I can't remember exactly, but they were at Geelong inside an hour and a half or something insane. Outmarkers never stood a chance.

I got Udo Bolts autograph at the start....:)

went the same as Gilmore, McGrory, Aitken etc etc. Awesome trackies who could never quite do a Stu O'Grady and cross over and make serious money.

531Aussie 04-25-05 09:07 PM

why not?

Couldn't adjust to the racing or Europe?

classic1 04-25-05 09:09 PM

A bloke I know rode that year off a middle mark. He said that after the Westgate bridge he never rode anything smaller than 53x14, mainly 53x12, and was caught by scratch at Colac, and hung on for like 2km only!!

Who knows? Having ridden against McGrory and Matty Gilmore, they are two of the strongest blokes I've seen. They can really put the hurt on.

Woods should have World Proefessional Pursuit champion in 1989 (they used to have to do 5 000m) except for a freakish ride by Colin Sturgess where he started sprinting out of the saddle on the bell lap!!!

That's it. One day in a million.

Woodsy's 1990 Telekom team out here for the Sun Tour were on Columbus TSX Merckx's with Suntour Superbe Pro. Beautiful bikes.

classic1 04-25-05 09:15 PM

Racing 200km +. Some blokes do it well, some don't. Endurance and rude good health are just as important as a big motor.

531Aussie 04-25-05 09:17 PM

Wouldn't that have been "Telecom" back then?:p

I remember when Woods won one of those pursuits (maybe 1990 Comm games?) by so much that the commentators were saying there was no limit to what he could do, then I don't think I heard anything more of him apart from his failed attempt in Europe.
Couldn't believe it

Were they the pink and black ones or the green ones? I remember drooling over the pink and black Merckx's one year.

I rode a Vic points score title (92 I think) where Woodsy kicked butt after spending 3 weeks on the piss after riding the 6 days.

Nah....before then. Mauve, green and pearl white. Same scheme as the Hitachi and 7-Eleven bikes, just different colours.

Question time...

What's the story behind this picture? (Who is it, what did he do, why did he do it)

ed073 04-25-05 09:37 PM

It's Pavel Tonkov giving the old "up yours"....can't remember why though. He's not Italian, so it can't be for being left off the World's team....:D

Probably to do with his career being written off for the umpteenth time and he just won a stage of the Giro or sumfing....
