I've been traveling for work this past month. My eating has not been good. I have a hard time resisting the make-your-own Belgian waffles at my hotel breakfast, and our lunches have largely been fried chicken and barbecue.

about to buy my own soda maker. just to make sure i got everything correct, i need a starter kit, which is consisted of the actual machine, some CO2 cartridges, and a special bottle; I also assume flavoring and syrups are optional, correct?

As for flavoring, i like black cherry, but where do i find "flavor packets" for it? Seems like all the ones being sold contains either sugar or sweetener. I just want some flavoring, and that's it.

I'm super sad that my cookies on this site freak out now and when I open there are 10 unread threads, then I read one, go back to forum top and there are 3 unread threads.

There's a million recipes out there to make flavorings for your soda, but I am lazy so the most I'll do is squeeze a lime or mash up some mint leaves.

Chappy, I think our first kit came with a bunch of sample flavor packs, that we never used. I don't think the second one did though. For me, I just buy lemon or lime juice at the grocery store - the kind that usually looks like a fake plastic lemon or lime.

And start saving Bed Bath and Beyond $5 off coupons. They are great for exchanging CO2 cartridges.

Saturday I went into the mountains with a group of climbers. I had to turn back early but they must have been amused, they invited me to another ride in 2 weeks. I'm in blue.

So apparently I have to race in A (CATpro/1/2) class here. This completely sucks for mediocre CAT3 like me. Maybe I should just ride around country side and drink beer. That sounds like way more fun.

Interesting, I have close family friends in that general area, and we have done a few long visits. Seems like the terrain would be fun to race. Even if it is crazy hard, might be worth checking out the next time we are over there.

I also prefer plain seltzer, and just add plain lemon/lime juice, or to bottled fruit/orange juice to reduce the sweetness.

hah, those waffles used to be my go to when traveling for collegiate racing. the decision of which hotel to stay at was often heavily influenced by the presence of a waffle maker.

on the other hand, i think eating so much this past weekend (and eating SO MANY CARBS as inspired by the guys I was staying with) may have had a lot to do with how surprisingly good I felt while racing.

This. Staying at a bed and (big) breakfast this week. Hitting Devil's Kitchen at the end of every ride.

Hey Harlan, if you're still around, there are good group rides you could hit up Weds, Thurs, and Saturday. If you want specifics let me know in the Northeast Racing thread.

When I did stage races I was so afraid of bonking I probably gained weight, although back then I didn't gain weight because that's how I was. I remember a 10 day? long training camp in FL back in the day. My friend gained a relatively massive amount of weight because he was eating like me. I lost some.

My town being what it is we've had a "professional" spartan racer kicking about for the past 2 years or so, singing its praises as if it were a crossfit branded kale smoothie. In general it's kind of fun to hear him brag about his insane 5 hour workout days where he hikes for 2 hours, swims across a reservoir, bikes to the gym, pumps iron, and only eats 1 gel because it trains the body better or something like that. He's got a full social media spread, videos posted on Facebook, a following of eager self-described bad asses about town that take to that sort of bravado, etc.

Because he considers me an athlete roughly on his level he likes to let me know what's going on with his racing career, give training advice, tell me about his sponsorship deals, ask about supplements, and try to encourage me to transition into spartan racing, because endurance athletes tend to be good at it. Today his bombshell was that due to some sort of fighting with the Spartan company he has decided he's done with Spartan racing and instead is going to create and promote a new sport consisting of downhill trail running, because he's really, really good at it. "Think downhill bike racing, but without the bike!" And then he took the lime from my burrito and ate it.

Unfortunately slipstream is no longer powered by chipotle, otherwise I'd totally accept their contract offer.
