The awesome thing is that the 100 mile ride is not a 100 mile race. As far as I can tell the race is 4 timed sections, and the route includes 'a welcome 30 mile stretch of untimed road'. It sounds like a Strava KOMs meet gran fondo mash up.

Now that I think about it, one of our P12 races had a strava KOM winner prize that was pretty big, although I don't recall the $ value. It might have been worth as much as the race win. It was a 10 lap race with a ~3:00 hill to the finish line that was the strava segment. The winner was the race winner on the last lap. So there you go.

I thought that was what a gran fondo was... a competition over timed sections of a longer, supported ride.

I've never done an "official" gran fondo but my buddy organizes a popular local event called the Gunks 10000, which is a 100 mile supported ride with 12 timed climbs. The winner gets a free burrito, and his/her name attached to a homemade trophy (the "gunky chunk") that lives at the local bike shop. The "support" is my buddy's brother in his truck. The event is really very fun. I wrote the scoring script, which is a web scraper that grabs everybody's times on the 12 climbs off of strava.

If they are I didn't know that. Of course, I've never done one, but I did look at the Wikipedia entry.

If anyone wants more info drop me a line.

Weren't you the guy complaining about lost Garmin data. You can not pay a lot for the muffler or you can have data loss. Pick one.

I complained about garmin when I had one, but I found a replacement for ~$250 that has had zero issues for the past year. Anyway, I don't mind Garmin's imperfect hardware, but their RMA process is infuriating for sure.

I'm just happy to see that like power meters, there are more and more gps options too.
