From talking to the bank today it sounds like having that 20% makes a huge difference in your monthly payments due to mortgage insurance if you didn't pay the 20% up front.

What I don't get is I drive around Cupertino or Los Gatos (really expensive cities inside an already expensive area), and you see normal cars in most driveways.. where are they getting all the money?! Or if they have expensive cars, how many people can be directors/bosses/etc??

Oh well, life goes on.

you can refinance when you get to the 20% equity and get rid of the PMI. that's what we did, but we first bought in the late 90s. you probably dont want to cash out your 401(k) but getting into home ownership instead of renting was probably the best investment my wife and I have done, we made out like bandits when we sold our 1st house and were able to buy our existing with significantly above 20% down with no cash flow implications. we were admittedly fortuitous on the timing though.

Careful there. My brother-in-law went through a divorce fueled by a similar situation.

Haha, I'm about 20lbs heavier than when I used to race and that jersey's one I used to race in, which makes things look even more 'inflated'. And yeah, back in the gym after the 2nd back surgery 1.5 years ago. Cycling much is inconsistent with current work goals, but I'm hoping to be able to make it out over the weekends and get in some saddle time and ease back into it.

Suit jacket is like a 41 now from probably a 36-38 when I was racing.

as for housing, i guess i should consider myself lucky that 1-br condos here cost around 200-350k, and i'm much more inclined to go with the lower range as i can rent them out at ~1500-1600/month when i move out/need to upgrade.

Compare this to the philly burbs, where i can get a nice stone-architecture 4-br house for ~$550k, oh, and a great school district to boot.

Working for the government is exciting on days when there is a shooting at parliament hill. Apparently we are locked in the building until further notice.

Saw an ad for Infocrank that you can pay whatever you want. So I went to the company's site and kept hitting "Reduce" to lower the price. Got it down to $785 when the site told me I'd reached the end of my options. BUT, i could continue to get the price lower by inviting friends to like Infocrank.

I didn't feel like bothering anyone. Plus, I just bought an SRM so I don't need this.

One day, 2 of them took off while the fast guy and I stayed back. This crazy guy says "You wanna try and catch them?" They were a couple hours ahead, I think, but I sat on his wheel for hours and we did catch them. That was a hard day, loaded touring bikes drafting.

I've really been enjoying this year's "end of season" fitness, with no pressure to ride at any particular speed or effort, still I feel like just hammering as hard as possible, just for the sheer joy of being fit and going fast. That's really encouraging for next year. Also, have to replace my big ring... worn out. Yup. Seriously. Thinking about replacing it with a 55.

When I rode a 54, just because it was bigger than a 53, at some point I bought a 51 for winter training. Just as encouraging as it is now, it's really depressing when things go the other way fitness wise and the 54, with the stupid cassettes/freewheels everyone used, meant I was over geared much of the time.

Recently I did run a 55 for a year or so, only because I wore out the two 130BCD 53T chainrings in my inventory. The 55 was free - I'd already bought it for our tandem (and the stamped steel OEM tandem chainring was just a bit too not good to use it). It was a point of conversation, esp since on my bike the 55 just looked huge, but not much more use than that. Nice for particular situations on descents and in tailwinds, I was still very comfortable moving up when others were much less so. Since I only came from a 53 it wasn't a big jump. From a 50 or 51 it would have been a bigger jump.

You're using an 11T, right?
