She was the NEBRA "back office". I knew she wasn't well but this was unexpected.

I think about my mom being in such rough shape after my mom's surgery to remove some cancerous tumors that her doctor pulled us family into a conference room. I didn't realize that this was the "your loved one may die" room until a nurse walked in by accident - all the stuff the doctor said seemed surreal until that point. We learned later just how bad it was from her and the doc, and that the doctors basically didn't expect her to make the night.
My mom made it almost 3 years after her surgery. In a selfish way I feel fortunate that she made it that long. She lived at my house for most of the 3 years but in 5 months we'd barely covered stuff we talked about over the time she had remaining.
Woke up just now and it felt like I'd just gotten the text message that she'd passed, all sorts of thoughts racing through my head.

I'm trying to win something on eBay right now. The auction closes in 2 hours. So far, it is still a good deal, but it is approaching the point where it would not be. I'm waiting until the last moment to bid.
But given that the auction is closing so soon, I'm having a hard time concentrating on much else.

I've also gotten close and bailed on some pretty good stuff (at least based on the listing) like SRM power meters, Cannondale SI crank arms, HED wheels.
Where I used to work the distribution center had auctions to clear stuff out. It'd be super cheap for some stuff, and all the bidders were fellow stores, so it wasn't quite so sniper like as eBay. But if my boss wanted something I'd snipe. We got some good stuff like that.

I'd exchanged emails with her in March - she was instrumental in the process of moving the races to Bethel this spring. After the race stuff finished we exchanged a few more as I was happily surprised to hear from her - she had an out of office message earlier saying that she'd be out of the office indefinitely. She admitted that things weren't super rosy (we talked about "Facebook life" vs "real life"), that she was working to try to keep her mind off things, but I never thought it was that bad. I don't know how the different cancers work though so no idea if this is normal. She was diagnosed in Dec so she made it just 5 months or so.
I think about my mom being in such rough shape after my mom's surgery to remove some cancerous tumors that her doctor pulled us family into a conference room. Wish I could go back to that plan, I try, but its hard. My motivation isn't as strong. Try going out with friends or going to a party and eating under 600 calories...

As a Dutchie, I really only know very little about this subject, but this article about the Racing scene in America piqued my interests, and thought maybe you guys have some opinions about it.
I know some of you organize and promote races yourself...

As of like 2 weeks ago my car has a doppelganger that parks in the same lot. Seeing as our cars are Swedish (Saab 9-3 verts) I've wanted to leave a note on his window written in faux-swedish from my auto challenging his to a duel, because I'm Walter Mitty. I finally saw the owner of the car and he looks like the kind of guy that would call the cops about it which makes me sad; I should have expected this, he's also parks in the only handicap spot in the lot and does not have a hang tag or proper license plate.

A bit stunned. Our inside rep at USAC in Colorado, Susie Diller, passed away today. I never met her, spoke with her briefly maybe 20-30 times, and emailed her probably 5-10 times a year for a while. Still, though, from what I could tell she was a super bright, helpful, cheerful person. She was diagnosed with cancer Dec last year.

I went from 195 to 155 in a few months. You really just have to sack up, don't compromise at all and stick with the plan. It was hard, because one meal can derail me for a week or two. Didn't do anything special, just focused on high protein food and not eating over 600 calories a sitting (unless I was training) with one 1500 calorie cheat meal a week.
Wish I could go back to that plan, I try, but its hard. My motivation isn't as strong. Try going out with friends or going to a party and eating under 600 calories...

Also, to put things in perspective - at 175-215 lbs (my weight range from about 2002 to about 2009) I only get as low as about 25-28% bodyfat, no idea what max was but probably 40-45% (lean body weight about 125-130 lbs). Right now, at 160, I'm something like 22%. At 155, dipping under 20%. I'm not skinny - to be TKP skinny I'd need to be in the 130-135 lbs range, which would be about 5% body fat. That isn't going to happen but if I can get under 20% it's pretty good for me, and it's enough to be a sniper-good Cat 3 (meaning I can do well in a flatter crit but still can't TT or climb).

As a former Dutchie (lived in Voorschoten as a kid) I wish we had some of the passion/resources that one of my friends sees over there. He's living in Amsterdam and he was just astounded by all the venues near him, purpose made circuit courses for bike racing. They're almost like running tracks in the US, just everywhere it seems. I was too young and not a racer when I was there so I have no idea how widespread the circuits really proliferate. Might be just his area.
The thing the article doesn't say is that many of the grassroots promoters make little or no money. It's a huge money sink that if someone could finance grassroots promoters it would be a huge, huge thing. I haven't finished paying bills from the 4 races I promoted this spring but I'm looking at about $7-8k still to pay (guessing I've paid $10k so far?) and I have $4k left from the races (Aetna Nutmeg Spring Series). In the past I had savings/job to draw on but this year I have neither and it totally sucks. Because of that I've shelved any ideas of promoting other races this year. I secured two venues for 3 days of racing for 2015 but I can't even pay for permits right now. Someone asked me if I'd gotten in touch with a particular person about a circuit race (more expensive to promote due to needed lead cars etc) and I told him flat out that I'm so in the hole I can't afford to risk another $8-15k for one day of racing. There were three people asking about holding races on three new, never been raced courses in CT. I can't do them, I hope someone else can.
In a related thing the whole socialism healthcare and retirement thing would help ease some of that financial burden, at least at the level I understand it works in Holland. My mom said the biggest difference between living in the US and in Holland was the every present stress in the US of immediate bankruptcy/brokeness due to unexpected medical bills. There's the long term stress here of being responsible for saving for retirement. I have a brother and sister that were born in Holland and my mom said she just went to the hospital and it got handled. My dad made enough money to retire in the US but it's partly because he gets a pension from a European company (not sure exactly how that works but it does). I understand the money comes from somewhere but the ratio of cost/income in the US is high compared to other countries.
I say that with all irony because an insurance company sponsored my series.

Haven't been on the bike in 10 days. Had a flu over the weekend and didn't even get out to Mt Baldy to see the TOC. The next big climb is going to suck.

+1 on doing it. 183->149? from mid Oct to about late Dec (in 2009). Totally 100% motivation. Went to the team Christmas party and didn't eat a single cookie, no soda, and I think I had veggies and some meat. Then mid-Nov to about Feb this year, 178->157. Currently at 160-161, before I got sick I was 157-158.
Motivation is the only factor in if it works or not. Without motivation, forget it. I know now what I need to do yet I just don't do it unless I'm motivated. I tell everyone and everyone "Diet first, train second". This second diet I cut out sugar, inadvertently, and it made a huge difference. I inadvertently added it back and I started bonking again. I also trained only to burn off calories and it had the side effect of giving me good base miles.

That isn't going to happen but if I can get under 20% it's pretty good for me, and it's enough to be a sniper-good Cat 3 (meaning I can do well in a flatter crit but still can't TT or climb).
