Yeah, and that's my struggle. As someone who comes from a family of teachers (and who wanted to teach elementary until I decided I loved science too much to give it up), teaching is a big part of who I am. Half-assing it for students who pay as much as $1500 for a semester of my time feels wrong, so I need to find a middle gear - not all or no effort but somewhere in the middle.

I can attest to that, unfortunately lol I have a rather important committee member who just got tenure in only like 4 years, but it certainly wasn't based on her work with me.

Well I think a lot of it comes down to what you consider 'half-assing' teaching. I've had exactly this conversation with other folks in my own discipline. One did convert to TT and I think he works too hard. I have about 40hrs to give, and enough of that has to be devoted to research. Some of it to service. What's left goes to teaching. That means I can devote maybe 15hrs/week to teaching to have a good balance. So I start from thinking that way: I look at how much time I have each week. I don't start from thinking about what needs to be done for me to be a 'dedicated' teacher...because we can *always* do more.

Yeah...I might be one of those people who goes up for tenure in their 4th year.

naturally. if one finds the right buyer at the right time, you can get a surprising amount.

still, when something can be found, easily, new for $888, it's hard to imagine someone buying new for $850.

of course, i hope canuckbelle gets $1000+ for it.

sometimes deals are not available or inventory is low for whatever reason, or an old/used item happens to be particularly in demand for a specific person.

I read that and thought "wow, they can't build an emulator?" But I guess not.

I mainly read Jalopnik and the regular links to whatever the military site is, Alpha something. And Black Flag. And Formula Freak's stuff. Someone un-greyed me but I'm grey overall.

Confirmed my participation in North Star Grand Prix this year. Exciting to do my first stage race ^_^ Riding the CCA NC/SC state RR championship on June 12th (defending my title), then driving directly to St Paul, MN (with a stop somewhere about halfway). ...then driving home after it all. Going to be a long ~10 days!
