Street Racing

well, today i was practicing HARD-stops without skiding on a low-trafic area, slight down hill. as i was zooming along fairly quick i see a group of kids about my age(15) on cheap BMXs. My stupid fast & furious instenct kicked in, I made a quick u-turn with my rear-brake skid, quickly rode towards where they where, u-turn skid agin. Then i look over at them drop down a gear, NAIL-IT, and they freak(i dont know why) when i hit about 25mph on the side walk while they are on the street, and when i hit almost the end of the sidewalk i SLAM my rear brake on, locking the rear wheel creating the loudist skiding noise and i like back only to see them about 60feet behind me. then after i slowed down they cought up they try to skid, but the diden't and then i laughed, u-turn skid and went to walmart to buy some new brake pads i'll put on tommorow.

I cooked my rear brakes BIG time today, where down more then half the pad.

I know its a stupid story, but i was having fun.

Its cool. I remember doing stuff like this. In fact I still engage in the occasional street race on campus with mopeds, mountain bikers, idiots, etc. People tend to think that because you are in full racing kit you are going to race them. Its usually not a race, but I do put people in their place.

Also, next time you might try buying pads from some place besides wal-mart. I know for a fact that they are crap. There wear away so fast. My buddy has a walmart bike and you are right, after a dozen hard stops or so, you need to adjust the brakes so the pads will hit the rims. After 12 more stops it is time for new pads. they seem to be made of the softest rubber known to man, yet they still don't stop you that well.

You must not see the roadies...

I've had some people try to race me. Some time we had just done an all out sprint for 250m or so that ended about 100m before a red light. We all lay on the brakes after the sprint, the 3 other guys turned on the red to go home. This guy who was near us at the start of the sprint rolls up on his mtb with his friend who was also with him. My heart rate is still sky-high from the sprint. they pull up and asked if I wanted to race... I asked if it was really needed. They said yes, they want to beat a guy in "tight shorts". They jumped the gun on the redlight by A LOT. I let them go. They were wailing all out on their full suspension huffy's. The bikes were flexing all over the place. Light turned green, I clipped in calmly and put down 10 hard strokes, seated and caught up with them in a standing sprint. They were panting like crazy. I rolled up next to them and said so where are we racing to? They sat down at my pace and we all slowed down. They picked the next stop sign. I said "OK" and put the hammer down as hard as I could. I think I made it to the stop sign before they even reacted. I unclipped and crossed the line with my belly on the saddle and my legs out.... First time I ever did that, and it hurt my nuts. Practice before you try it.

I had a young guy on a BMX pace me on a warm up and was obviously thinking he was doing ok till I explained that he needed to be able to maintain that pace for two hours not just 200 meters. Then I put the hammer down.
