I'm sure there are other candidates, but after reading the article on Cadel Evans in CS is there anyone unluckier? Breaking the same colarbone 5 times in the space of what - 3 years ... that has got to suck.

Fabio Casartelli maybe. But as far as the non-dead ones go, I'd say maybe Poulidor for getting up against people who can kick his ass so often.

Modern day I'd say Paolo Savoldelli hands down (and collarbone down.. and nose down.. and ribs down, etc).

Raymond Pouildor gets my vote. Never wore the mallot jaune, always was second to Anquitel, then ran up against a young, powerful Eddy Merkx.

Poulidor was the original "Eternal Second".

He would always be competitive. As late as 1976 he was still the fastest man in France. But was down in the field with guys like Moser and Merkx.

Great attitude, great work ethic, great determination.

I guess I should have said "misfortunate" ... coming in second ain't that unlucky!

But then I've never come second in a race ... never come first either

Ok, if we are eliminating coming in second due to Eddy, Lance, Anquetil
then Wim Van Est gets my vote.

Speaking of Wilfried Nelissen, Djamolidine Abdoujaparov. Here's a photo, probably a second or two before he caused a crash:

Wouldn't that make the "unluckiest rider in the peloton" anyone near him in the final?
