i hate 'raced together, scored separately.' also kind of sucks when the combined fields means so many riders from one team racing--like 20% of the field.

We've got a house down in Sunriver and will have 8 guys in the 2's and 7 guys in the 3/4 field plus some guests of riders. There won't be much room in that house, but it should be a good time. If I can get over the rollers in the opening of the first road race, I'll be set for the week.
the start of your stage 1 (cat 2 stage 2) is more climb than 'rollers'. plan for about 35-40' of work with a few breaks.

i leave in the morning. see you there!

i'll be there before your start (my race is 30 or 45' earlier), but we finish around the same time as you guys don't do a bonus loop. should be super fun and not unbearably hot.

hack don't worry if you get dropped on the big rr stage - 99% of the field does.

much like FDJ/most teams in le tour, just go for stage wins! that crit for instance.

I've looked at the profile and the performances from last year. I should be able to make it over with some pain. Doable, but it won't be fun. I may be over selling my anxiety. It'll suck, but it will be a great time. Really looking forward to the TT and crit.

edit: missed saying hi at Chico, so will try to find you this go around @tetonrider

no worries. i think it could be a headwind up the climb so possibly will neutralize it. also, if you do get gapped, you have a long downhill to reattach. don't panic.

i'll be doing some support for folks in other fields so will probably be around at your TT (mine is thursday).

The course is run in a different direction as of last year. It changes the dynamic (longer, more shallow climb into the wind) vs the old one.

On on the old course breaks almost never stuck and it was more often a selection or attack on the last climb that lead to a small group with 20, 30" on the field.

Too bad you aren't here now!

racing was had -
I *believe* that fun was also had over the course of the weekend.

The Pro crit was pretty nuts - not a single break got established over the entire time (I missed a short bit of it, so maybe I missed something, but pretty well Hincapie just rode such high tempo most of the time that it simply wasn't happening)
Ben Wolfe got the closest in the last few laps, but never had more than a couple seconds. sheesh, holy wattage to do what he did tho.

@tetonrider or @Andy STi ... you guys seem to be more clued into this race than I am. Any idea if they've settled on a Friday Road Race route? They have posted three different maps in the past few weeks.

First iteration was the same as last year.

Second iteration was same as last year, but finished at the new snow park before the turn back onto the highway.

The most recent iteration ( https://ridewithgps.com/routes/14758061 ) the same as the 2013 route, but starts at last year's snow park instead of at Bachelor. So, climb 8 minutes, descend 30, rollers rollers rollers, climb for 30 minutes.

Huh, I haven't seen that newest change yet. I'll look into it. I would prefer this most recent version. The climb from Sparks lake to Bachelor is legit and really blows the field apart. The time bonuses are nuts this year @ 25, 17, 10 or something like that.

where are you getting info, hack?

as it happens, i looked at their site in the past couple days and noticed there is a mix of old and new info on there. the maps i saw all indicate a finish at the new snow park, but the descriptions and mileage are off for at least some categories (like the 2s).

if it is the pre-2014 CW route with west village finish...i like that. i feel like the new route going CCW and finishing at the new snow park (which i suspect it will be) will actually encourage better, more wide-open racing and give a break a better chance to stick.

I pulled it off of their site:

CAT 2 ? Stage 2 RR ? July 22 | 2016 Cascade Cycling Classic, Bend Oregon

Start location now listed as Wanoga and finish location at Bachelor. The jpeg map shows the finish at Kapka Butte, but the linked "Ride with GPS" map (immediately above jpeg map) shows start at Wanoga and finish at Bachelor.

Might be some old stuff lingering on the website. I'll wait for the official tech guide to roll out.

Either way, the RR is too climby for me! That first day is always just about survival for me at Cascade.

Luckily the timecut is super generous, like 20% or something. The field always shatters in the 2's (and probably every cat), with a small group going for the win ahead.

First time I crossed the line at the RR I literally shed a tear! That stage is hard for this crit rat.

hey, hack--it's looking like all the races are going counter-clockwise around bachelor (i.e. pre-2014 finish). all amateur fields seem to start at wanoga, ascend just a bit, then hit the course.

posted ridewithgps data from july this year matches the maps for all categories, except cat 2. (the cat 2 map shows a start at wanoga and a finish at the new snowpack, going clockwise; i think that is simply wrong as it is the sole outlier.)

Aren't all the courses running clockwise? Start at Wanoga, left on Forest Service Road, then continue on opposite of last year. They emailed the following last night for cat 2:

https://ridewithgps.com/routes/14758061

Also ... I saw that @mattm is in the 35+ mix.

I'm in it to win it! (the crit that is)

Pretty small field, and combined with the 45's is annoying.. so each race will have two winners? This is my punishment for getting old I guess.
