remember this lesson well. nobody wants to be on the front of the pack with their legs hurting. No one can out power a peloton, but unless there are real teams racing, the peloton is often its own enemy in chasing moves.

The group looked utterly defeated when they rolled past us; you dun good. Are you holding off on your upgrade (read: do I get to work with you at nutmeg next weekend?)

This was exactly my thinking. In fact, this is particularly true in really trying conditions, like rain, severe wind, or even a really technical course. When the wind was almost blowing me over, I kept telling myself that it was a great thing. The pack would be infighting tooth and nail to stay upright and off the front.

I'm not holding off, but they denied my request for an upgrade because 2 of my races "didn't count." One didn't meet the minimum distance and another was not verifiable, so that set me back nine points. It was really demoralizing, but I understand and don't blame them one bit. Although I've finished 1, 2, 1 three weeks in a row, I suspect I'll need to do well one more time before they'll move me up. I want that upgrade more than I've ever wanted anything in my cycling career for a personal reason, so I'm just dying to get there!

The guy that solo'ed off did a lap 30 seconds faster than the fastest cat 4 lap.

Road race break? So much for starting us in a stupid parking lot lined far back and neutral start? Sure the guy is a tt pro and it is his first road race but the same thing happened last year. Upgrades from 5 to 4 to 3 in three races then proceeds to not know how to handle at all.

Also the crit had half pulled before 10 minutes and all but 8 people pulled by 20 minutes. I got pulled with 4 people with no warning and could have placed 4 higher in the crit had I known. This teaches nobody how to handle and is a failing of the league manager imo. There are about 8 people between cat 4 and 5 that haven't been upgraded that should and is making such a high entry to racing that it is going to frustrate people.

Sounds like you have a very meticulous upgrade coordinator. Congrats on the great results!

Ugh. If you need me to post DNFs let me know.

If your upgrade guy is the same as mine (name starts with E), he's known for being totally by the book. I had an upgrade denied because the number of same-category racers in one race couldn't be verified. Gave me a lot of motivation to win my next race!

It sounds like you're on the same page, but I think it's just fine for the upgrade guy to be inflexible. Guys who earn points will keep earning them; letting guys squeak by doesn't help anybody. It doesn't sound like you'll have any trouble earning your upgrade emphatically.

Upgrade coordinator has to be a totally thankless job. When I resubmitted my request he wrote back something like "thank you for not whining."

In this day and age, with USA Cycling posting results on their pages, you would think the whole thing would be tracked somewhere automatically. Or maybe it is and I don't know about it.

Different coordinator here, but he's been awesome, even when telling me the bad news. He's extremely nice and very knowledgeable. I have zero problem being held to the appropriate standards.

Truth told, I do sometimes wonder why others seemingly aren't held to those same standards, but no way I'm going to whine about it, especially since I'm all-but totally sure the person talking to me wasn't responsible for the decisions that left me scratching my head.

Word, it's also more of a speed bump than the end of the world now that upgrade points do not expire. I can understand and appreciate why coordinators are super strict about it. In 2007 After 2 of my races were disqualified due to length and region restrictions respectively, I had 24/25 then partied all winter and watched them expire slowly but surely as the next season wore on. That was fun.

Naval Yard Crit 3/4

Got in the winning break, which formed on lap one and established by lap 2. Since my crash last year I am still not 100% confident in my cornering and that really hurt me. I would lose a couple wheel lengths then have to waste energy catching back on. Throw in 25-30 mph winds and a guy that is apparently a pro from his home country in South America and I unfortunately only had to pull the plug and drift back after about 5 laps in the break. Rode in the group which was only about 15 of us left with the rest of the field (50+ started) pulled and came into the last corner twice as fast as any time before that. Both guys in front of my clipped there pedals and saved it and I picked off a couple riders before the finish. Okay race and definitely got more comfortable taking corners as the race went on, but disappointed I couldn't hang on to the break. But still very early.

Naval Yard 1/2/3

Had about a 10 minute break from the last race before this one started. Guy in front of me couldn't clip in and almost fell over, so till I got going I was immediately sprinting to catch on, but was pretty far back. Got in a group of 5 guys and we shared pulls, but got pulled after 12 laps of so. That race was absolutely shattered as well. 40+ starters and about 10-15 finishers

I know what I need to work on and time to move on to the next race
Sorry to hear about the 3/4 race. Seems like the physiological strength is definitely there. It's good that you are approaching it with a bit of apprehension after a crash, and i'm sure it'll come back soon enough.

I think we're both firmly in Masters territory. I've often thought the same thing in the past, but recently I've started to change my mind. Most Masters races, including obviously Nats., are 1/2/3 and in my area a lot of the senior races are 1/2/3 as well. Why not have 'Cat. 2' on my tombstone? I don't know how much it would actually change the races I'd do.

@thekillerpenguin makes a good point about the new immortal point structure. I think it does allow for officials to be more strict about points since you're not fighting the clock.

Yeah I was being totally disingenuous. I'd upgrade in a hot minute if I got the points. I just like to pretend I don't care.

My main reason for wanting it so badly is a deeply personal one I won't share unless or until it happens, but the other is that "you've got to get to 2 if you want to get to 1." I realize it's unusual for someone my age (40) to have that latter goal, but I have it and I plan to reach it.

Hey when I started racing I was totally in awe of this mythical creature called a "Cat 2". In the first 3 years of racing I met two and they were astonishingly strong and modest. The Cat 1 I met was even stronger but he never rode hard in training. I so wanted to be a 3. I was 15. It was 1983.

I pushed really, really hard to upgrade to Cat 2 until about 1996-1997. I basically gave up at that point.

It took me until 2010 to upgrade to Cat 2. Until then I'd never qualified. One official (I think for a few years officials could upgrade you) offered to upgrade me after a somewhat cheap 2nd in a Cat 123 race. Tiny 15? rider field, one guy rode away, I got 2nd in the sprint but the guy that beat me moved me across the whole width of a 3-4 lane road and got himself DQed (I don't think I'd have beat him anyway so I wasn't going to protest - we knew each other, the shop I worked for sponsored him, and we regularly attacked together etc). Anyway that one time I turned down the offer because I didn't think I'd earned it.

If I could get a Cat 2 upgrade again I'd take it, again, for the same reasons. Why not. And just downgrade after it got super demoralizing.

In 2011, my first/only season as a 2, I only finished one P123 race I think (Bethel) and only placed once in a Masters race. I was definitely not Cat 2 material and downgraded before the season ended. Part of it was we knew the Missus was pregnant but we didn't tell that to anyone. They all basically found out in Jan or Feb at a cyclist-hosted party when it was pretty apparent that the Missus was expecting.

Lousiville crit Men 5- 9th out of 37
Only my second race so didn't really know what to expect, 37 guy field. Started about mid pack to feel things out. One guy rode off the front after 4 laps and rode solo the whole race. Made my way to the front after about 5 laps and rode there most of the second half of the race taking turns with a couple guys. Think I burned a few to may matches, there is a power incline to the finish and got passed by about 12 guys heading to the finish. Grabbed a couple gears to get up and sprint and just didn't have much left, got around a few and ended up 9th. In hindsight I should of stayed deeper in the pack and saved something for the group sprint but I thought if something got a break I could go with, so I hung out towards the front.
Overall I'm happy I wanted to break top 10 and just get some more experience and I did just that so not bad.

@mattm will laugh at me, but I'd rather get beat by old nats and world champs than Danny's 12 year old teammates.

give me a year or two when I convince you to totally give up on p12 and we could totally take the team comp in 35+. There's not one team out there stronger than us 1-6 or 7 if we had our best 35+ riders.

Copperopolis had Chronos, Specialized and Mike's shut out of the top 5...
