Maybe you should hang under the tent and watch the puppies race. I'd buy you a recovery beer.

On that - not that you asked - I got hurt this summer trying to get up on a wake board. I started using a Tens unit a bit while sitting. I think it helps.

Tomorrow we have 5 kids (and two secret helpers ) in the Pro 1-2 in Santa Maria. At 84miles, I'm not thinking there has been enough base. Puppy Doge is still hacking, but its left over stuff - I think. He has to race sometime and this is on his new bike. Boulevard is the focus. Really VOS is the focus, but he should be somewhat healthy for Boulevard.

OIC.

Have you raced those courses before? They're both great.

Dana can get a little dicey because everyone is so excited, but it's such a fun course. Barrio is great too; the terrain suits me very well.

Bittersweat Santa Barbara Road Race

DNF - but good warm-up for next week.
So warm even this time of year for SoCal, P12 was 75-80 degrees. Puppy Doge was coming off his illness and this was his first road race and first time on his new bike. This field had a few pros from Giant Berry Farms, Optum and quite a few Cat 1s, so its beginning to look like spring (Boulevard will be loaded with talent I expect). Field looked to be about 75 riders. The race is 6 14 mile laps - 84 miles total.
This is near the most difficult standing feed (Cascades 3rd RR feed is bad too) I know of. Its about 1-2% and riders are moving 25+. The P12s tend to slow down, the less experienced categories don't and hit the zone fast. Seems about 30% miss and its quite high crash risk.
So 2nd lap Puppy made the break of about 14 riders. He got a Strava KOM, now 2nd, for the lap (14 miles), I expect due to his bridging to the group.
Anyway, 3rd lap 2 min in front of main group, Puppy gets flat. Support is behind main group. He ends up off the back of the main group and chases on to main. Later his front derailleur won't shift and he's big ringing it. Turns out front brake assembly (my fault) - new bike issues) is too loose and pulled the Di2 connector out. So he abandons his first race since - we think ever - at 56 miles. We were not sure he had the miles in his legs to go all the way anyway, but speed is coming along. The rear flat is fixed with Stan's and we bulled about 3 tiny spikes out of it. We are running real light tires for the VOS TT and we wanted them on now to test. That is a tough call that I may regret.

Here is the clip of the race and you can see the weather we had to deal with.

That's how I've seen it when there's only 1 wheel car. Sucks if you flat out of the break but I assume they're trying to ensure that they can catch anyone without leaving them behind for a lap.

No. Was thinking about doing it this year instead of Valley of the Sun because we might have gotten a few more teammate for Fire vs Sun. When I saw that they cut out the TT stage I said forget it because if I'm going to take time off of work I want to maximize my pain and embarrassment.

Will be at VoS as I have for the previous 4 years. Could only convince one teammate to come along.

Roger Millikan Memorial Crit this coming Sunday. Signed up for Masters 55+ and Masters 50+. Debut of new team kit. Basically no pink except for club logo.

I'll be in the 4/5 40+, the race right after yours. If you see a guy in a Redlands Kit, stop by and say hi.

Its the comm cars call. If I'm in it I move the service vehicle behind the leaders once a decent gap is established and it's safe to do so.

Anyone else doing UCLA?

There are only 10 registered for the 4/5 35+, I was hoping for a decent sized field to help suck me up the hills.

Anyone do Tour de Murrieta? I'm specifically wondering about the time trial, and the dirt portion. Is it sketchy on a TT bike?

I have done it on both bikes (TT & road) with similar results. Its a 50/50 coin flip. If you decide for the TT bike (which I recommend) dont forget to test your dirt riding skills as climbing on a TT bike with saddle way forward will make the bike more unstable. If you have good MTB skills you should be fine. The dirt portion is mostly hardpack with some rocks so more durable tires with good traction are recommended.

Ugh, I'll probably have to preview it on the TT bike and see how it goes. I wish it didn't have this dirt section, but oh well.

murrieta is worth it on a tt bike, but if it's wet, you will be on the horns for most of the dirt climb. I remember it being hard pack and very rocky then going soft sand/mud

Yes - son did it last 2 years. He was on TT bike and went down. Pretty rough. Still, its TT bike material because of the lead up to the dirt. Probably should be holding on with hands in the dirt section. I have video of course...
