I use a "Third Eye" glasses mount mirror. It allows you to scan the road behind you, if there are lanes merging from the left, or if the road is curved. For riding in the parking lane, keep as far out from the curb as the outside edge of the parked cars. Then you wont suddenly swerve into the view of cars approaching from behind. When you pass parked cars watch for people about to exit and leave space for the door to open.
