Parts Hierarchy?

Can anyone point me to a parts hierarchy? I'm getting back into mountain bikes after being out for a long time and I'm looking at bikes trying to figure out the best bang for the buck. What parts I'm specifically looking for are: brakes (mechanical disk and V), forks, and drivetrain. It appears that these are the parts that vary the most in my price range.

I've tried searching, but piecing something like this together based on key word searches is taking forever and I don't want to reinvent the wheel if I don't have to.

An example of something I'm hoping to find might be: Deore > Alivio > Acera. But how does SRAM fit into this? And brakes... I know hydro disk are best, but when you get to mechanical disk vs. V-type and then the brands on top of it? UGH!

So am I asking for too much here? Can anyone help? If not, I'll keep searching and piecing it together on my own.

Thanks in advance!
