I wear MTB shoes and use SPD's on my roadie without any issues up to 5-6 hours. I have those Specialized shoe foot beds which I hear do wonders if you have problems with hot spots, though I didn't have this problem before getting the foot beds.
Easier walking, easier clicking in/out and saving a couple hundred on new shoes & pedal system synched the deal for me when I was considering switching.
