I generally wear bibs. I do have some shorts that I'll wear on occasion. But then, I also am happy to wear khakis on short commute rides, swim trunks when cruising a beach trail with friends, or nothing at all when in the privacy of my apartment on a trainer. But for comfort while riding, in my opinion, good bibs is the way to go. The only alternative that matches it for comfort is wearing nothing, but that's not really acceptable outside of my apartment.

Shorts dig into my waist in an uncomfortable way. Sure, they were nice in summer months when not wearing a base layer, but now that I have a pair of PI bibs with a mesh type material (like the material in my base layers) in the "suspenders", I think they'll be comfortable even without a base layer on. So I think my few pairs of shorts will see less use this summer now that I have nicer bibs.
