Lubbock man accused of terrorizing cyclists on biking trail
(2/21/07 - LUBBOCK, TX) - A Lubbock man who claims he was trying to protect the environment stands accused of terrorizing cyclists by stringing wire between two trees on a mountain biking trail.
A Lubbock County grand jury indicted David G. Knape, 62, on Tuesday on one count of attempted aggravated assault with a weapon and one count of attempted aggravated assault with intent to cause serious bodily injury.
Investigators say Knape strung a wire between two trees at Canyon Lake No. 6 in eastern Lubbock with the intent of hurting passing cyclists.
Riders who use the trails say they have seen traps there for at least a year, the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal reported in a story for its Wednesday editions.
Cyclist Dewayne Wallace said he has seen bottles, nails, and large rocks pushed into the trail and had been watching for the person responsible for about six months. Wallace said he reported Knape to police on Nov. 6 when he saw him stringing wire.
Knape told investigators he was trying to protect the environment.
