I find it waaaayyyy easier to balance on rollers using a fixed gear than a geared bike. My theory is that the rear wheel will carry your pedals through the dead spots, which are the points in your pedal stroke where you are most likely to shift your weight around to compensate.

Using a geared bike on rollers will help smooth out your pedal stroke a lot more than using a fixed gear however.
