I agree that they're not smooth, but they grip so well it's worth it. They are not good in mud, but I've found them to be exceptional on wet rocks/roots, loose dirt and scree [which together make up 90% of my climbing].
That's the makeup of the areas I ride in, and the Velociraptors get it done!
