That is a wide open question and even a tough one for a Shop guy to answer. You need to figure out just how you want to ride and where. If you want to do trails then a Hardtail might be the answer. If you do only paved bike paths then a Cross bike might be for you.
I have such a variety of bikes, that I can almost pull one for what I need to do.
I am an older and heavier rider that looks for comfort. I stay away from aluminum frame bikes and look for good quality Steel which is getting tougher to find. If I had the money, I'd LOVE a Titanium frame bike. Maybe one of these days.
Could you give us some more info on your desires to ride?
