Very unusual story, from my experience. When I've dealt with bike shops in smaller cities, they've been very friendly and helpful.
I'm surprised you haven't made the trip up to Sedona or Flagstaff by now, if for nothing else but to check out some other options. That's a trip I'd love to make again.
I've seen the "Simple" bikes at my LBS, but have never ridden one. They look comfy.
