How hard you feel the bumps is inversely proportional to your rolling resistance. As unlikely as it sounds, the same amount of tire contacts the road for any two bike tires (with the same stud or slick pattern) at a given pressure. In other words, a tire inflated to 85 lbs. pressure is going to feel the same if it's fat or thin. Fatter tires only feel softer because they are typically inflated to lower pressures. I'm sure this is bound to cause controversy so flame away...
