The cyclist picked up the bike after the driver kicked his wheel, which seems a threatening and provocative action - in such circumstances, the cyclist was not given a large number of options. I am not saying he couldn't have just walked away, but having had your rear wheel kicked so hard it flips away, wouldn't you react in some way?

Besides, it doesn't seem it would have made any difference; the car driver was coming, and nothing was going to stop him - and the bicycle's wheel was the first one in his path, then came the cyclist.
