Wait...so you were using white lightning on your chain? That stuff should really be used fior stuff like bearings, if you use it at all. (I used to, but now use the Phil Wood bearing grease - it's great.)
There are other oils that are more conducive for chain use, like Tri-flow, or a dedicated chain lubricant, like ProLink Chain Lube. The white lightning stuff is really heavy, and it seems like the Phil Wood Tenacious is only a slight step down in density from their bearing grease, which means it is also probably too heavy for chain use. The main problem, which you've experienced, is that these will absolutely cause you to pick up more dirt and grime. Also, make sure you wipe off the excess (some might argue that chain lube only ever needs to be in the rollers, and that any excess will only cause problems).
