Riders generally use the wider one up front and I do that also.

Rear tires are more for propulsion, so a skinnier tires goes in the back because less rubber touches the ground for more speed (easier to pedal).

Front tires are wider are more for control so the wider surface area keep you in control in fast turns and such.

There are also other reasonings, but I can't really think of them on the top of my head. You should do a search because I have read that around here.
