This may be beside the point, but I'm wondering what you gain by making this switch. A couple grams? You still have derailleurs (you need something on the front to keep the chain from derailing on bumps), and have lost one chainring and 4-7 rear cogs. An interesting project if you like to tinker, but I don't think it will make your life any easier as far as maintenance or weight.
