Re the big seat tube, I have read on Sheldon's site that MTB chainlines are a bit wider than roadies' due to the thicker seat tubes, requiring the derailer to sit further out. Sounds like that is the problem here too...?

I'm also still on the derailer problem, if I get a solution I'll let you know.
