Polyurethane clear coat

I'm rattlecanning an old bike for errands-riding, and want to clearcoat it soon. I've read a lot of the threads here and on other boards about bike painting -- thanks, folks, some really good ideas and some pretty wacky ones -- but nobody's mentioned using household outdoor-grade polyurethane for a clearcoat.

It comes in all styles from the hardware store, is always sold for woodworking, and the glossy kinds are even available in spraycans.

Has anybody tried this? I assume it's not the same material as the urethanes used in paints for metal surfaces, but I wonder if it will do the job.

Shininess, fading and discoloring are things I don't care about.
Chipping and scuffing are things I do care about.
