Thanks to all that responded! At the end of the day I went with Hockey Tape. It's cheap and plentiful on ebay, is water resistant, has a good adhesive that likely won't get gummy like duct tape, and is also very tough stuff. It takes a good pair of scissors just to cut it.

Downside? It's so tough it's difficult to strip lengthwise, but still do-able (need scissors to get it started though). It's also very thin but is so tough I imagine it will perform better than the stretchable plastic rim strips like Nashbar sells.

Did I say it was tough... and cheap!? Thoughts/experiences?
