I saw the same thing happen last year after a cyclist was killed by a hit and run driver. The forum discussion following the story on the local paper's website was full of posts supporting the local cyclists, but there were also many posts from militant drivers with the attitude that the "cyclist had no business being on the road", and "the cyclist got what she deserved". I guess these incidents bring them out of the woodwork.

At any rate stories and comments like these make me pull my head out of the sand and realize there are many drivers on the road who really think we shouldn't be on the roads. In the long run I suppose it makes me a safer cyclist, but it still annoys me when I read about it.
