New to forum - New to biking

I am new to the whole "bike" thing.
I bought my first bike ever (I never had my own bike as a kid) last July. It was a Giant Trance 3. I'm told I basically own a "Cadillac". I bought this bike while I still lived in Oregon. I'm now in Tucson. I'm still getting used to mountain biking in Arizona (what's with all the rock gardens?).

My boyfriend is a very serious mountain biker. He prefers to ride down the sides of mountains and do jumps.

I've decided to make the switch.
I'm in the process of buying my first road bike.
It looks like I'm going to be getting a Cannondale Optimo Feminine 2. Any thoughts?

I'm hoping to participate in the Tour de Tucson this November. Any advice for getting ready for my first race?

I'd also love some general advice on training. Does anyone have a training regimen that works for them that they'd like to pass on?

Anyway I look forward to riding more and learning about riding.
Thanks
