Probably won't get much for $5. You can get a decent ride for $600. In addition to Specialized and Jamis, consider Giant, Cannondale, Kona, Trek, Gary Fisher, etc. All of these brands will have similar offerings in the $600 range. I'm sure others will also suggest looking for a used bike since you may be able to find a stronger mix of components.
