You're gearing is totally fine...very common Double set-up. Different set of tires (700x23's) wouldn't hurt, but heck, if you're still wanting to easily handle "dirt connector roads", I suggest you stick with what you got.
A CX bike can easily work as a Road bike...just not the other way around (something I'm beginning to realize as a work to convert my old road bike to a SS Cross.)
