the rockhopper is lighter than the Hardrock, and has a less aggressive design. Its geared towards more to true XC while the Hardrock is intended as an all- arounder. But then, i have no experience with the Rockhopper myself. Though I would be disappointed if it couldn't handle a 3 foot drop.
