You can use these for anything - I commute on them, ride centuries, hill climb. They're also popular for track racing and even cyclocross.
I'm building my 2nd set on some old school dura-ace hubs and DT swiss DB comp spokes. Despite some marginal increase in weight, I fully expect to haul ass (assuming I build them properly).
