Specialized's Forks/Shocks

I was looking at the Specialized FutureShock and the AFR rear shock on their mini flash site showcasing their technology.

The AFR looks pretty normal aside from the self-adjusting dampening (adjusts while you ride). However looking at the FutureShock is confusing. Is it actually two shocks in one? I mean the top portion is shown as a pneumatic (air) shock to absorb small bumps while the bottom is a coil/spring shock to handle big ones? I'm confused... Am I looking at this totally wrong or is that it?

Woah... Awesome R&D... Specialized should be congratulated

Well then again Trek came out with the ABP and Full Floater which look pretty intense as well
