I like the helmets that have the adjustable nape of the neck stabilizer. Giro calls it Roc-Loc, I think Trek calls it QuickFit. They serve to hold the helmet in the proper position. However, even with your child's head being above average, it still might be too small for these helmets. My 3.5 year old is wearing one and it is adjust almost to as small as it will go. I'd expect to see them retail at $25-35.

On the other hand. The smaller child helmets typically have less of a protrusion on the rear. This will make it easier for you to adjust your son's position so he is not staring at his toes (towel, pillow, etc.). Of course this assumes that your trailer does not have a helmet pocket.
