Surely I can get round the "wrong side" issue by missing first one, then two holes? I'm reticent to give up on this, since I can't find the rim in a 36 hole, but I do recognise that I'm almost certainly being an idiot. Help me think about how to do it, and I'll probably decide it's too complicated.
