it happened, it was during a cold, drenching rain, so i

Oh yeah ... that's normal. Try taking your bicycle computer out in -20C weather, it'll go black. And if it just blanked out (different from going black), then it could very well be the batteries. Batteries don't work well in cold weather. Take your digital camera out in any temperatures below freezing and after two pictures it will start flashing the low battery symbol. Your battery isn't low, it's just too cold.
