Trans-Pacific shipping options and prices

Anybody ever shipped a bike from one continent to another? Who did you go with? What did it cost? Caveats? There are the standard carriers in the US like FedEx and UPS, but I'm wondering if there are other options I should consider like a bonded excess baggage shipper. If I need to do this (and neurosis on my part prevents me from actually knowing this for sure), I would need to ship my bike from somewhere in the midwestern US to somewhere in Japan, if that makes any difference. One of those hard shipping cases would be nice, but is more or less out of the picture for financial reasons, so tips on making a cardboard box bombproof would be appreciated as well. Really, any thoughts on this that you have at all would rock. Thanks.
