I had a junky old Phillips 3-speed cruiser that I got for $10 at a yard sale. I used it for errands around the neighborhood, and I usually never locked it, because I just didn't care. It was heavy as a boat, and considerably janky, so I left it on the side of my house, rather than drag it inside every day. One day, I was leaving for work and it was gone. I was kind of bummed, but not too broken up, because this wasn't exactly my prize pig.
So months pass, and I basically forgot about it. One day, I was walking the dog, and coming home through the alleyway, when I noticed that my bike is in the neighbor's backyard, about ten houses down from me. I put the dog in the cage, walked back down to their house, and rode my bike home. It was basically as I left it. Then I sold it for $50 on Craigslist to a minister.
The people who stole it are vaguely-hipster types, whom I've started to see riding fixed gear conversions in the past two months.
