I am not an older person (23) but I still choose a flat bar for my first bike. I ride a Felt SR91 and it's great. If I get in better shape and ever decide to race then I will likely pick up a drop bar bike but for now with commutes and long rides the flat bar is fine. In traffic I feel like I have a little more control and also a little extra height to peer over cars with.
