When I go down town, I cross over on 45th to 5th east. 13th to 5th on 45th is the worst spot, and it's really not that bad. Like Aloyzius said, 3rd is fairly calm, avoid 7th and 9th. Try both 3rd and 5th, decide which you like best. Enjoy the ride!
