I'd say stick with the trail and go further past Watt. There's lot's of nice scenery and it stays pretty flat. You'll come to some hills when you hit Hazel (crossing the bridge!) but it's well worth it as it drops you right next to Lake Natoma. The ARBT has so much to offer and you've only scratched the surface.
