The disc brakes on bicycles are pretty new to me, so I'm not familiar with the Avids.

On the hydraulic Shimano disc brakes there is lateral adjustment via ovalized mounting holes in the calipers to provide centering the caliper over the rotor. Although I haven't tried the centering/mounting process, its very simple. You mount the calipers loose, squeze the brake lever, then tighten the caliper down.

The problem I had is that when I mounted the front caliper, there was an even amount of adjustment to both sides, the rear was not any where close. I'm still waiting to hear back from the shop to get their story on the situation, but it seemed to me there would be issues in trying to get things working properly once mounted.
