IIRC, the
original bright idea behind the curved cranks was that they were made of
springy steel and under hard pedaling effort, they would straighten out a bit and (in theory) increase in effective length.
The principle doesn't sound totally wrong, and if you had the perfect materials it might work. But steel is not the perfect material, and aluminum is even less so, as it suffers even more from metal fatigue than steel does. Composites
might be able to make the principle work, for a price.
