Portland generally has good bike access, especially in my part of town (southeast). However, the rivers present a major obstacle to the planning of routes. One of the bridges over the Willamette (Sellwood bridge) is soon to be closed for (eventual) repair and many have suggested opening the bridge to cyclists during this time (with the logic "cars are too heavy, but how about bikes?"). This would connect otherwise very disparate sections of PDX for cyclists.

Is there a precedent for this in other cities? (I'm guessing "no," but hey...)
