If you want a tough, practical street bike in an MTB style, then look for a non-suspension model. The sus fork is not neccessary, adds weight and takes maintenance.
Kona Smoke is one of the few ridgid MTBs of any quality, and its good value. It comes complete with slick tyres and fenders, exactly as any regular commuter would use.
You are right to pick your bike shop with care. You will need them for advice and repairs later, and buying the bike from the shop can get you a lot of goodwill which you will spend later.
